Songs for Scripture Memorization

This year, our church is committing together to memorize Scripture, one passage each week.

To help myself keep it top of mind as well as build a habit of repetition, I am trying something new. Each week, I am creating an original song, assisted by AI and an "AI persona" that I made, built directly around that week’s memory passage. Starting now, I will be posting a new song every Monday, available for anyone who wants to listen, learn, and sing along.

My hope is that this will help more people find it easier to hide God’s Word in our hearts.

Why Music for Scripture Memory?

Most of us already know this from experience. Music helps words stay with us.

We can recall song lyrics from years ago with surprising clarity, even when other details fade quickly. Rhythm, repetition, and melody have a unique way of carrying words beyond short-term memory and into something more lasting.

Scripture itself has a long history of being sung, recited, and spoken aloud. The Word of God was heard long before it was widely read. These songs are a small attempt to recover some of that ancient practice and bring it into our weekly discipleship.

What Genre?

I have chosen to use folk music as the main genre for the music. I know folk music may not be everyone’s preferred genre; I chose it very intentionally.

Folk music is especially friendly to the spoken word. It allows phrases to breathe. It welcomes uneven rhythms, unexpected turns of speech, and lines that do not land in perfect rhymes.

With many modern genres, the structure of the music demands that the words conform to it. When Scripture does not rhyme neatly or a phrase runs longer than expected, the result can feel forced, awkward, or cheesy.

Folk music works the other way around.

It bends around the words instead of pressuring the words to bend around it.

That freedom makes it a surprisingly good home for Scripture, which already carries its own rhythm, emphasis, and weight. Folk music leaves room for the Word to continue to be the Word without the need for extra phrases or filler words.

What to Expect

These songs are intentionally simple.

They are not meant to be polished pop tracks or background noise. They are meant to be repeated throughout the week, sung quietly, or played while the verse slowly takes root.

My hope is that they will feel genuine rather than cheesy, and natural rather than particularly AI-produced. I'll try to edit out any actually disruptive oddities. But really, no more odd than folk music normally sounds. 😜 (Sorry if you love folk, I also enjoy it, I'm just giving it a hard time.)

A Shared Weekly Rhythm

A new song will be posted every Monday to align with our church’s weekly memory passage.

You can listen casually, use it during personal Scripture time, play it with your family, or simply let it run in the background as the words settle in. However you choose to engage, my prayer is that these songs serve the larger goal we are sharing together this year.

Thank you for participating! I hope these songs help the Word of God dwell richly in you as we memorize Scripture together, week by week.
